Brendan Woltman will talk about how to prepare your yard and get your trees and shrubs ready for the coming cold and snow at the October meeting of the Flagstaff Flower and Garden Club.
He also will give tips on how to extend the growing season into the fall.
Woltman is manager of the tree and shrub department at Warner’s Nursery and Garden Center in Flagstaff, where he has worked for four and a half years. But his gardening expertise goes back a lot farther than that.
“My dad does a lot of horticultural things ~ garden clubs, etc.,” Woltman said. “And he’s good friends with the guys that work with the plants at the [Arizona-Sonora] Desert Museum in Tucson. So I grew up around plants.”
Surprisingly, he didn’t major in horticulture in college. His degree is in corporate finance with certificates in investing and accounting.
“I wanted to get the business side, since I already knew about plants.”
His ultimate goal: “I want to open my own garden shop.”
The meeting will run from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3, at the Elks Lodge, 2101 N. San Francisco St., Flagstaff. It’s free for members, $2 for guests (exact change appreciated). Beverages and snacks will be provided.
